Joan
was born in Tanneck, West Germany, raised
partly there and partly in the United States and finally settled
and went to high school in Indianapolis, Indiana.
She was classically trained with an MFA from the Asolo State Theatre and a BFA in
Theatre from Joan first started as an actress.
She had a recurring role on All My Children, a daytime Soap. She
worked on screen in Working Girl and An Eye For An Eye, with Sally Field.
She has performed in theatre regionally at the Asolo State Theater,
While acting, she discovered that she was a lover of Jazz.
Funny how the path of life leads you to your calling. She got great reviews from Michael Bourne of WBGO.
He wrote the liner notes for her debut CD, Bird On The Wire, which garnered
rave reviews in LA Jazz Scene, Jazz Improv, All Music Guide, Cadence, JazzReview, com, All About
Jazz and others. His comment was that Joan gets to the heart of a song’s
story. That is
apparent when you hear Me and Mrs Jones, The Way You Look Tonight (which is done in a Basso) and I covered the Waterfront. Joan is a versatile singer with an extensive repertoire and a
unique comic ability that earned her the 2002 MAC Award for Female Musical
Comedy. That led her to
produce a ground breaking video pod cast devoted to the lighter side of
jazz mostly at Birdland. Joan’s
second CD: In The Key Of Comedy was live with Jay Leonhart, Matt Wilson, Tedd Firth and Bob Dorough. After this CD she put together a swing
band called Jesters Of Jive, an ensemble featuring Mark Berman, Saadi Zain and Moe Roberts.
Jesters Of Jive focuses on the music of such musical masters of wit as:
Fats Waller, Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan, Slim Gaillard, Slam Stewart,
Oscar Brown Jr. and others. She also performs regularly with her
10-piece band, High Society Rhythm. Her credits include performances at The Rainbow Room, The Oak Room in Grand
Prospect Hall, The Carnegie Club, Trumpets Jazz Club, The Manor, The Joan
has performed for charitable causes such as breast cancer, doing one of
her many shows, called Women of Note, a tribute to Women Songwriters, a show that Time Out New Bloomberg Radio, and “Hilarious”
by the Associated Press dubbed her show: As the Crowe Flies: “Fabulous!”. Seven Deadly Songs is a hysterical
look at good and evil and earned her a second MAC Award”. Joan is very comfortable singing with
a Trio, a Quartet, a Quintet or Big Bands.
She knows how to lay back and she knows how to jump out at you and
swing. | |
