George W. Carroll
George W. Carroll was born in Waltham, Mass.
with a musical heritage on both sides of the family. George's father composed music and was
proficient in piano, reed instruments, and voice. George's grandmother was an accomplished
vocalist. So it was quite natural for George to evolve into his present state of journeyman
musician, composer of songs, jazz pianist, and vocalist. Carroll attended The Berklee College
Of Music for piano, voice, and harmony. Later, he attended The Phil Saltman Studios four years
studying voice bel-canto style. His Bachelor's degree is from Salem State College in Massachusetts
for music and journalism. During his musical journey, he has had many career highlights, one of
which was meeting and conversing with Tony Bennett at The Music Circus in Cohasset, Mass. Bennett
told me to "love what you do and never compromise your music." George W. Carroll has always held
true to that philosophy.
Since moving from Boston to his new digs in Sarasota, Florida, Carroll has found a second and
very active musical career. "I find this to be delightful, in that music is 'fresh' once again.
Working with such prodigious talents as Richard Drexler; Patrick Bettison - bass, and John Moore; David
Via - drums, I find music to be a continuous and lovely experience, the way it should be." Carroll
was the featured vocalist with The Big and Phat big band at The House Of Blues, Cambridge, Massachusetts
(1995), singing for the college crowd (Harvard Univ. Students), a very discerning audience.
"College students are much into jazz, swing, good music, and composers."
George started out fronting his own big band (his favorite idiom) for several years and has put
together many a jazz duo, trio, quartet, and quintet. Carroll tours and lectures, giving
composing and vocal clinics at colleges, universities, high schools, music stores, etc.
George W. Carroll is "THE NEW COMPOSER ON THE BLOCK". Carroll has verbalized his desire to leave
a legacy of some of his 1500 assorted songs written in the style of The American Masters. His
new big band CD project "LIFE IS GOOD" will be marketed globally in 2000, and features the world's
best arrangers, great American music, and the awesome arranging talent of Frank Mantooth whose big
band arranged George's original signature tune "Life Is Good" for the disc. Currently, George is
musical director for the new film "SAMANTHA"; which will release to the Sarasota film festival in
2000. Carroll along with his lyricist Kathi Warren wrote the theme song. The tune Sarasota Sunset
was written by Carroll for a specific love scene as well as other musical 'beds' written by Carroll
for the film. "Samantha" is the project of one Producer/Director Robert Dunham of Suncoast Yuma
Productions, Sarasota, Florida. The readers will remember fondly the many Godzilla movies produced
in Japan. Mr Dunham starred in most of those films while he lived in Japan over a twenty year period.
Carroll says: "Networking with the likes of such prodigious talents as Alto sax genius
Greg Abate, the profound arranging talents of the great Frank Mantooth, Band Leader and trumpeteer
Dan McMillion, Trombonist Roger Delillo, etc. has made me a better all around musician. George W.
Carroll says: "LIFE REALLY IS GOOD".
